71st ANNUAL READERS POLL
- p 34 : Sun Ra
From Chicago to the Omniverse
By John Corbett
We travel back more than 50 years to Chicago, where the young pianist Le Sony’r Ra was building a reputation as a daring bandleader and composer. Sure, Ra ascended to international (and intergalactic) fame leading his Arkestra in New York and Philadelphia, but it was during his 15 years in Chicago from 1946-’61 that Herman Poole Blount legally changed his name to Sun Ra, assem-bled his first Arkestra and established key associations with the likes of John Gilmore and Marshall Allen. Here’s how Ra started his journey.
